With this project already passing three weeks, last night I said to myself (in my head, not out loud, as the baby’s room is right next door), “Alright, that’s enough.” I sat down, turned off youtube (for a while…it came back on later), and got painting. All I had needed at that point were a few more base colours, some details and washes. I got up to the washes stage, which I just finished this morning.
And bam! here is the 98% complete Bloody Reaver!
I say 98% complete because, like the Heldenhammer, I did not write the names on the sails. However, unlike the Heldenhammer, these sails do not come off, so it’s likely I will not be writing anything on them. I may just not writ anything on ANY sails, we’ll see.
Of course there are numerous touch-ups to make. But I am so done with this ship, and I will save all fixes until later, possibly the end of the whole project.
I once again learned a lot about painting this ship while working on it, so if I ever do another, I’ll do some things differently. One problem is that the two halves don’t come together flush, which is probably because of the primer and paint on the bottoms of the sails (which slot in between the two sides). Will have to work that one out. Also, I will definitely paint the hull in four pieces, and not in two, as getting in between the half-halves is just silly, and there are some details there that need to be painted.
But otherwise it is done, and I am happy with it. I mean, it’s hard to go wrong with these ships, they’re made so well. From the tabletop, it looks great, especially beside its arch-nemesis, the Heldenhammer.
Next I will be painting the necessary play tools (measuring sticks, wind thingy, etc) and the terrain, all of which is primed, so I can get the first scenario done. My goal right now is to have those finished within the next week, so I can play the game beginning November. That’s 9 days, which should be enough to paint far-less-detailed pieces than these two ships.
After those are done, I will take a quick break from Dreadfleet and work on some other minis, and then come back to it later for more ships. I don’t want to focus only on this game or I will lose interest. Because I’m silly like that.
Anyway, now to go spend some time with the family, and tonight I will begin work on the next pieces.
Thanks for reading.
