After finishing the main part of the Heldenhammer things have been slow going in the hobby zone. Partially I needed a quick break from painting tiny things, and I also went away for an overnight visit to Niagara Falls with the family. Even last night I only got a little work done.
Here is where I am at now, working on the sails for both the Heldenhammer and the Bloody Reaver.
I went ahead with the Reaver’s sails, experimenting with a technique I found on youtube. It seems to have worked out well, in my opinion.
It looks super messy while doing it, but I think it ends up looking good in the end.
Pretty much you paint the sail just as you would as if there were no designs to paint (basecoat, layers, washes, whatever) and then drybrush the details on, and finally paint the sails again to cover all the over-brushing.
So the way I did it was basecoat the sail in Sanguine Base, then layer on Beaten Purple. Next I drybrush the details with Trollblood Highlight, followed by another drybrush of Morrow White. Then I clean it up with Beaten Purple, and wash the details with a little Devlan Mud.
I could definitely use a little more work in the initial phase in terms of highlights and shades, and overall a better range of colours would probably be good, but this is what I have to work with. I’m going to experiment with washes and highlights to make the sails pop a bit more…MAYBE. If you know my painting style, I don’t like bold highlights in the usual GW style, so I might not work on that too much.
I think the biggest issue I’ve had so far here is that my priming has not been very well done. It’s been streaky and pretty lazy, not giving the the basecoat a nice solid layer to go over, so I had to paint it a few times, which blows. I’m going to have to wait for a warmer, dryer day around here so I can spray prime the rest of the pieces, so I don’t run into this problem again. Or just pick up better brush-on primer!
Anyway, tonight I will try and finish the sails up. Actually, yes, that’s my goal-challenge that I’m setting out. I’ll put on the last two episodes of The Walking Dead season 2, and I should be good to paint!
Checkin tomorrow and see what I’ve done.
