Well, after many months of contemplating, deciding and waiting, I have finally gone ahead and picked up an Ogre Kingdoms Battalion.
I got a great deal on both a Battalion and an Ironblaster/Scraplauncher kit, and could not pass it up. I had already bought the Lore of the Great Maw cards, many months ago, and I have access to the army book, so I am ready to go. I just need to finish my Khador battlegroup first.
And I have a plan with this army, which I hope will work this time around. I am starting small, only opening the Battalion first. I will build it all, so I can play 800pt games with it. I will paint ONE model at a time. Yes. One. I am also considering using my virgin can of Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade on these guys. I know this “talent in a can” is one step further down than using washes (“talent in a bottle”), but I do not want an ‘Eavy Metal-worthy army. I want a painted army. I should have used the dip (er…brush) method with my TK. That could possibly have helped me finish it. But I opened too much at once with that army, as usual. So with the Ogres, I am going small and I am going easy. Well, I don’t think using Quickshade is that much easier, but to get tabletop results I do believe it will be quicker. Or at least less overall work. Or some such.
Building the Battalion, though, is going to require a touch of planning. My overall plan is to build all the models in the box as they should be built, i.e. 6 Ogres, 6 Ironguts and 4 Leadbelchers. When it comes to characters, I do NOT want to buy the available Finecast models, a) because of the horror stories that accompany Finecast, b) they cost too much, and c) the sculpts are unique but nothing special to me (especially that Butcher/Slaughtermaster…WOW is that one ugly model!). So, instead, I plan to convert/kitbash other models to get my Lords and Heroes. It helps that I don’t run named characters, as well. I’ve already got ideas for a Tyrant, BSB Bruiser (this one’ll be big), Slaughtermaster and Butcher. I think the two most important ones early on will be the BSB and one of the Wizards, as my first games will be low points and at most I will need 2 characters. So, as I build the Battalion, and later the Ironblaster and then other additions to the army, I have to consider certain things, like which heads I want to use on the characters, so that I don’t double up on certain faces. I think I will use heads from the Ironblaster, Thundertusk and the Mournfang for these guys.
Oh, I almost forgot the Firebelly. That’s the only GW character sculpt that I actually like. I really like it. However, even at a discounted price at Meeplemart it’s over $40. That’s the price of 6 Ogres. Or 4 Ironguts or Belchers. More than an Ironblaster or 2 Mournfang! That’s crazy. So, with a little extra effort I will have to make my own. It won’t look as good, for sure, but I can get most of the required bits from a box of Ogres, giving me 5 extra bodies anyway, AND the pride that comes with having made my own dude.
So, again, my initial plan is to put together the Battalion, slowly add kitbashed characters, and overall get a variety of Ogre Kingdoms models in my list. I will NOT build a double-Ironblaster with a Gutstar (i.e. a unit of, like, 20 Ironguts and all of the characters in it), or whatever the popular killer list is. I love a lot of the models in this army, and I want to have them on the table, effective or not. I’m more of a MSU (Multiple Small Units) kind of guy, or at the very least MMU. I think a fine high-points list for me will include blocks of 9-man Ogres and Ironguts, or 8 if there is a character in them. Maybe 2 units of 4 Leadbelchers. An Ironblaster and a Scraplauncher. A Thundertusk and a Stonehorn. A Giant and some Sabretusks. 1 large or 2 small units of Mournfang. And if there is time, units like Yheteers, Gorgers or Maneaters (all of which will be alternate models or kitbashes). And I will probably add the cool Specials and Rares before I increase the number of Ogre and Irongut units.
Of course, that’s the plan. As my plans tend to go astray or completely AWOL, it is only conjecture at this point (sorry, I’m not sure I have ever used that word before and I thought it was about time, appropriate or not). I have faith in myself, though. I will AT LEAST get the Battalion and the Ironblaster completed, as I already own them. I think I’ve mentioned previously that I am also looking at the Bretonnian Battalion. I might have to finish what I have of Ogres and switch to something else so I don’t do my usual over-doing it again, and maybe it’ll be Brets. Or something else, who knows.
But, regardless of the long-term success of this army, you can count on seeing Ogres on this blog in the very near future. ‘Cause, what else am I going to do between putting my 1 1/2 year old and newborn down to bed and them waking up again? Sleep? Pshh! I will have another post about my plans with the Ogres, and plenty of WIPs and showcases as soon as I start work on them.
Thanks for reading.
