Well last night was another great Tuesday for gaming. Partially at Meeplemart, partially at Andrew’s, fully fun.
First, xombe (Steve) and I played a game of Dark Age: Apocalypse.
It was nice to get this on the tabletop once again, and it happened to be my 10th play. I’m going to write a proper battle report for it, so I’ll save the details, but I will mention a few things. First, this was a big game, coming in at I believe 885 points or so. I’m not even sure I did the calculations correctly, but that’s the number we were aiming for. It was xombe’s entire Forsaken force against my entire Outcasts force. Lots of models on the table. And almost that many dead by the end! “Everything Dies” is correct! I took a picture of “Death Mountain,” showing all of the models that died through the game. By the end, I had only 2 models, and xombe had only 4. Craziness. Brutal. Brutally crazy.
Next Chris joined us and we played a 3-player variant of Warhammer: Invasion.
This game is pretty good. I own a lot of it, I have for a while now, and I’m only just getting to play it properly. I’ve built decks for all the factions except for Orcs & Goblins, although that one is in the works. Our game last night pitted my High Elves against xombe’s Dark Elves (my deck), against Chris’ Chaos + Skaven deck (his). I guess technically my High Elf deck is also full of Lizardmen, and the Dark Elves have the Undead on their side. Now that I am playing again, and have built most of the other factions’ decks recently, I should go back and look at the Elf decks and maybe revamp them. Or I’ll wait until I get a few more plays, first. Chris and I will be bringing our decks out regularly, and hopefully in between other games on Tuesdays we can play Invasion. Oh, and Chris won this game, but only because they ganged up on me early on 🙂
And lastly, xombe and I headed to Andrew’s to join him and Scott, where we played Sentinels of the Multiverse.
I am really, really enjoying this game! I am so glad we are playing it again. I’d be more than happy to bring it out and get it played once a week for a little while, maybe until we get through all of the Villains? That would be great. For last night’s game I took The Visionary, xombe took Tachyon, Andrew took Fanatic, and Scott took The Bunker. It was a pretty cool team that assembled to face Ambuscade, that Device-laden hunter extraordinaire. Midway through the game it looked bleak for us Heroes defending Rook City. We were getting low on HP and it didn’t seem we were doing much to Ambuscade. Yet we found our groove, and with HP ranging from only 2 to 4, we managed to beat the Villain and save the city. Bam! And no one died! Well, other than Fanatic, but that was on purpose.
Yeah, what a good game. At times it can be somewhat fiddly, especially when a Villain or Hero has a tableau full of cards interacting with each other throughout the game turn. xombe has suggested that it would go a lot smoother if the various abilities were icon- or colour-coded to reflect when they activate, like immediately or “start of turn” or “end of turn,” etc. I think it’s a great idea, but I am happy with how the game is, as is.
And that was the night! Not as many games as last week, and I didn’t get to play Smash Up again just yet, but I’m sure before the end of the month I’ll play one or two more nights, and get my plays for October past the 10 I am at now.
Thanks for reading.
