So my wife let me off the daddy hook tonight so I could do some gaming. Thank you hon!
I ended up going to Les and Laurie’s, as did Chris and Sherry, so I knew it was going to be a good night.
First off was two games of Looney Labs’ Fluxx, a chaotic game that some despise.
I, on the other hand, quite enjoy Fluxx. While I haven’t played it much in recent years, it can be so quick and kooky that I have a good time with it when it does come out. I got to play Zombie Fluxx a few weeks ago, which had an extra layer of zaniness. I’d love to try Pirate Fluxx and the new Star Fluxx, as those are some fun themes.
Chris and Sherry hadn’t played this one before, and they quickly got the hang of it. Even with ever-changing rules, it’s simple enough to grasp. It does help when another player or two are keeping up with all the New Rules interactions, though. For my part, I don’t think I ever had any of the Keepers that matched the Goal, other than one that I stole from Laurie.
The next game we played was another filler, Felix: The Cat in the Sack.
This cutesie auction game has some big-time fun each round as you flip over the cards. There was a lot of laughing and groaning as good and bad cards came up. It’s always bad when you run out of money (mice) to bid and you know good stuff is coming up.
I did not do well at all, probably a good 20pts behind the leader in the end. I won the first set of cards nicely, but some huge blunders throughout the game cost me dearly. And they were quite avoidable, too! Chris and Sherry were new to this game, and I think they enjoyed it, what with all the laughing going on.
We ended the night with Flash Point: Fire Rescue, a new co-op game with a firefighting theme.
When I first heard about this game I didn’t really look into it, as I wasn’t much interested. But man oh man, did I enjoy it! You know that first time you play Pandemic, and no matter if you won or lost as a group you just wanted to play again? Well, this happened with Flash Point. And not only did I want to play it again, wedid play it again!
Whereas in Pandemic you’re flying around the world fighting off diseases that spread like fire, in Flash Point you’re running around a house rescuing civilians and fighting fires that spread like…fire! This is a great co-op game with easy-to-learn rules, neat mechanics and simply packed with loads of fun. It’s honestly a contender for top medium-range co-op game (short-range being something like Forbidden Island, long-range being Battlestar Galactica orShadow Over Camelot), so lookout Pandemic! With a pretty unique theme, really nice components, fun play and the potential for a real sense of urgency, I’m actually thinking of picking it up.
In our first game we got really lucky with the spread of the fire and where the civilians popped up. In fact, things seemed really easy. So for the second game we used the ‘experienced’ ruels (as opposed to ‘family’)…and got crushed. Literally, actually, as the game ended because the house fell down around us. Well, around three of us, actually…Chris and Sherry were in the ambulance and firetruck at the time, so we figure they quit the fire department and took off, pretending not to know anything about the incident. But man, was it ever a fun ride. We had the exact opposite rolls in the second game. The amount of Flare Ups and Hot Spots that came up, yeesh! We rolled a couple of locations a number of times…6-1 came up AT LEAST five times in the game. So no wonder the flame corridor never went away! By the end of set-up, I think, the kitchen was already completely engulfed in flames. Even with Sherry blasting the place with the high-pressure water gun on the rig, the fire just didn’t let up.
Yeah…a really good game. I’d love to play it again. It’s going on my list of to-buys.

Well, after this I had to go off to Scott’s birthday thing at a nearby pub. Happy Birthday, Scott!
And thanks for reading.
