Another week of only one gaming night. Wasn’t too bad, but it looks like December is going to be a weak month in terms of numbers.
Started off with Zombie Fluxx, while waiting for more people to show. It’s even zanier than the regular version, what with undead hanging around as well. Same chaotic fun, though. Makes for a nice filler, which we needed.
xombe showed me The Ares Project, which looks like a nice boardgame adaptation of an RTS system. Will have to try that sometime soon. Might have to play as the Colossus, the giant robot.
Next game to play was El Grande, four-player. I went into it with a) 100%, 2-games-played/2-games-won, and b) little recollection of the rules. So after a quick rulesplanation we were off. I managed to get a couple of “Score the Castle” abilities through the game as the first player, so that was nice. Much of the game saw Randall and I vie for first, and in the end we tied it up with just under 100-points. Whew, what a doozy! I think we’re both putting that down as a win.
Next came Sentinels of the Multiverse, a cool comic-themed, cooperative card game. Haka, The Wraith, RA and Tachyon came together to take on Baron Blade on the dinosaur-infested Insula Primalis. We easily destroyed his moon-pulling-downer machine, but he came back at us with a vengeance and, with the help of a T-Rex and some mis-reading by me, defeated us one-by-one. We may have stopped the Baron from crashing the moon into the Earth, but we paid for it with our lives.
I am really looking forward to more plays of this. It’s light, quick-paced and totally thematic.
Lastly we took Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix for a spin. This is an interesting take on a car racing game. While you do own a car or two for scoring purposes, you’re forced to move other cars, often to your own disadvantage. We played three legs, and the third one saw some crazy bottle-necking…and me spending $120,000 for my cars, only to come in the last two places making only $40,000. Oi! Good game, though. Not as exciting as Formula D, but not too far behind, either.
I picked up Kingdom Builder, which financially-speaking I hope is the last game I pick up this year. But there’s still another couple of weeks left 🙂
So that’s that for this past week. I’m hoping to get two nights of games in this coming week, as I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to do between Christmas and New Years.
Thanks for reading.
